Hey everybody!
Not sure how many of you are anywhere near Toronto, but this is a show I've been putting together for the last 5 years and I hope you don't mind me sharin' with y'all...
press release--------------------------------------------------------------------In 1986 the world lost one of its finest songwriters. Here’s a little something to keep you from forgetting... Monster Records and Q107 are proud to present, Toronto’s FIFTH ANNUAL,
“THIN LIZZY - a celebration:
the music of Phil Lynott”
Friday July 21st & Saturday July 22nd, 2006 at Healey's (Jeff Healey's club - 178 Bathurst St.)
For the fifth year in a row, some of the finest musicians on the Canadian indie scene (and some special guests from around the world) are coming together to celebrate and pay tribute to a true warrior poet, Philip Lynott. Since his untimely death in 1986, Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott has left a musical legacy that continues to influence and inspire musicians around the globe. Even the legendary Bob Dylan has been recently quoted singing Lizzy’s praises. Over the years, Lynott’s songs have been covered by an array of such diverse performers as Henry Rollins, The Corrs, Smashing Pumpkins, Randy Bachman, Huey Lewis, Metallica, The Cure and Canada’s own Emm Gryner (not to mention Heavy Metal Soul legends 24-7 Spyz!).
Last year’s show was a major success… In all,
eleven bands performed to a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Performers and fans alike had a fantastic time and this year stands to be even better!
Each year, the show has gotten progressively bigger and this year it is set to be two solid nights (
Friday July 21st and
Saturday July 22nd at
Healey's) of great performances and great songs. It’ll be the largest show we've done to date! Once again have artists from various musical backgrounds coming together to honour the memory and music of Phil Lynott. In the past, we've had country, rock, metal, punk, reggae and acoustic acts perform. There are no tribute bands, only artists paying tribute. In addition to all of the amazing home-grown talent we've got lined up (
Tacoma Redd,
Crazy Babies,
Ash Lee Blade,
The McBrides (feat.
Des Leahy, of
'Classic Album' band fame)
Crunchberry,
Gorgeous George,
Last Chance Band and more...), we have
Jimmy Coup (
Andrew W.K.) flying over from Los Angeles, the fantastic
Animal Grace is heading over from Ohio and once again we are thrilled to announce
Sean O'Connor (
www.seanoconnor.ie) of 80's Irish cult band The Lookalikes, is winging his way across the pond to help us pay tribute to his friend Phil Lynott.
This is going to be one hell of a gig.
The show starts at 9pm sharp and once again, we'll be taking orders for personalized, autographed copies of Philomena Lynott's book, "
My Boy”. (which is currently in pre-production as a major motion picture starring Gary Dourdan (C.S.I.) as Phillip and Holly Hunter as Phil’s mother, Philomena). Philomena has also graciously offered to take time out of her busy schedule to pre-record an introduction for the event.
In the past, all proceeds from the shows have gone to the
Roisin Dubh (ROW-SHEEN DUV)
Trust for the creation of a Phil Lynott memorial in his hometown of Dublin. This past summer, the statue was finally unveiled to much fanfare, (
http://www.fender.demonweb.co.uk/news/PhilLynottStatueUnveiled.asp ) in the heart of Dublin City-Centre.
Out of respect and much love for our dear friends in
Tacoma Redd, half of all monies raised this year will be donated to the
Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the name of their guitarist and friend
Ron ‘Dabz’ Boudreau-McLellan. Ron’s passing two years ago due to complications arising from CF, left a sad void in the Toronto Punk community and in the lives of all he touched. For more about Ron, please check this link…

The remainder of this year’s Toronto Thin Lizzy Celebration proceeds will be donated to the
TOMA Foundation for Burned Children. For some time now, TOMA has had a strong voice of support in
Q107 on-air personality
John Derringer. We ourselves are quite fortunate to have been the recipients of John’s kind, on-air endorsement over the years and it is a great pleasure to assist this worthwhile cause that is near and dear to his heart.
Tickets are
only $12 in advance (
$20 for both nights!) and $15 at the door.
Advance tickets are available at Healey’s and Monster Records (416) 975-1829 (664 Yonge St. Toronto, 11am-8pm Mon-Thurs, 11am-11pm Fri-Sat, 11am to 6pm Sun.)
