PostSubject: Re: SPYZ live April 18th   SPYZ live April 18th EmptyWed 5 Apr - 23:12

Jimi

I'm coming down from Asheville (a three hour drive) with the MOTHER VINEGAR posse to see the show. I have not seen Spyz since you opened for Stuck Mojo in 1997. SInce I got the birthday call from you last year I've been itching to meet you. The ATL is actually my hometown so it will be great to return.

Who can forget my dear friends in FOLLOW FOR NOW, along with the HARD CORPS, opening for you guys at the Roxy Theater in 1991? You guys started playing Grandma Dynamite and one by one you handed instruments to your road crew, until they were playing and all of you had dove into the crowd! Epic!

Hope your MySpace page has been helping spread the word. I told ya it works!

Question: how long will you be playing? Any old nuggets being dusted off for the new year?

4/18/06 MLK Chapel, Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA

Face the Day, Love for Sale, Yeah! x 3, Soulsucker, The Saturday Song, John Connelly's Theory > New Super Hero Worship, Grandma Dynamite, Stuntman*

E: Jungle Boogie

* = 22 minutes long

Sorry for the delay!

Great show on the 18th. WEIRDEST Spyz show I've ever been to, and I think the band might chalk this one up in the "strangest shows ever" category.

Left Asheville with my friends and got in Atlanta around 8:30 PM. The venue, on the campus of Morehouse College, is a giant church/chapel that has been converted into an assembly hall but still containing the ENORMOUS pipe organ behind the stage. It was definitely a cool stage setup.

The only really disappointing thing about the show was the small number of people in attendance. I kind of felt bad for the guys that assembled this show . They were gracious hosts and did a tremendous job of lining up the two-day conference and providing stellar music on this night. But it was about 15% full, and the energy in the room was very low. There were a few people getting into it, but for the most part people were sitting down spead out sporadically all over the room.

As a musician, I'd rather play to a small room that holds 50 people that is packed to the rim as opposed to playing a huge room with 100 people in there. Makes all the difference in the world. Even Jimi was like, "Damn it's quiet in here" after the first song.

Didn't see much of Gimmie, but ThreeFiveHuman were very good. Couldn't believe my eyes but Enrique from Follow for Now was back behind the drum kit for the first time in over a decade! As a drummer growing up in Atlanta in the late 1980s/early 1990s, Enrique was my hero, and was widely touted as the greatest drummer in Atlanta. Unfortunately, his unorthodox style, which basically carried Follow for Now, caused him to be replaced on their sole album by the producer's brother, a move which would eventually aid in the death of the band's career. It was clear that he had spent considerable time away from the drums, but towards the end of the show, he let out some classic Enrique riffs and fills that had be laughing out loud with pleasure. It was really good to see him again.

Unfortunately, some people left before Spyz came on. Regardless, Jimi and Rick were in good spirits and were hilarious as usual. Rick said something to the effect that no on could ever have guessed that music like theirs would be played at the MLK Chapel.

The band sounded fantastic. The last Spyz show I had seen was in February 1997 at the Masquerade with Stuck Mojo. I could not hear the vocals very well at that show, but on this night they were spot on. Rick and Jimi still have the amazing Spyz harmonies in concert and I didn't catch one flub.

Highlight of the entire set was Soul Sucker. The audience really got into the middle section's instrumental riffs and they erupted at the end of the song. You could tell the band was a little loose, which is understandale after not playing a show for so long, but I didn't hear any mistakes or errors. The band was on fire.

Grandma Dynamite had a new intro section that I was not familiar with. Basically the double-bass intro drum riff is missing, replaced with a new riff I didn't recognize. They also started Stuntman with the intro from "Racism."

Stuntman was about 25 minutes long and featured solos for guitar, bass, and drums. Jimi kept mentioning that people didn't want them to play or had tried to cut their set short.....he didn't expand but I'd love to hear what that was all about. Maybe the school putting a curfew on the band? Anyway, they were told they had only time for "one more," and I think the nearly half-hour Stuntman was in response to that.

Surprisingly, they were allowed one more song, which resulted in a very unexcpected Jungle Boogie.

Excellent show, weak crowd......but I really think it was because of a lack of promotion. My friend Scott lives and breathes the ATL music scene and he had not evern heard about it until I emailed him from North Carolina. No ads in the newspapers or on the radio.....with some promotion, the place could have been full.

Still, got to see an amazing Spyz show, my first in 9 years, and finally got to meet Wayne Kenyatta Richardson!!!

Hahahahahahaha! lol! Yes Kevin! The mysterious WKR has been met! lol! It was great to finally meet in person! And thanks for the Mother Vinegar cd, I hear some mixing and matching of the musical nature happening all over the cd! Congrats and good wishes! I have a whole host of thoughts about the ATL hit, most importantly how out of touch the upper fat cats and some of the youth are about this music and the fact that Black people do this! I was happy to see people there on both nights and although I would have loved to see that big ass room packed to the hilt, I am happy for those that came out. It will happen again and there will be more people each time it happens. The fact that it was at Morehouse alone made this special because there was opposition from many and it almost didn't happen. If there was one person there and he or she came away with a different outlook on music and the people who create it, I'm happy! I'll say this much-this may be the 21st century, but there are a lot of people whose minds are still stuck in SPYZ live April 18th Areunut2 ! Dig me?
